DESCRIPTION
ORO-ZONE is a comprehensive, broad-spectrum antidiarrheal powder formulated for the treatment and control of bacterial enteritis and gastrointestinal infections in poultry. This multi-action formulation combines systemic and locally acting antibacterials with adsorbents, protective agents, and vitamin A to address both the infectious causes of diarrhea and its clinical consequences .
Neomycin and streptomycin are aminoglycoside antibiotics that act synergistically against gram-negative enteric pathogens by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis and causing cell death . Sulphaguanidine is a poorly absorbed sulfonamide that acts locally in the intestinal tract, providing effective antibacterial activity against enteric bacteria .
Kaolin, pectin, and bismuth subnitrate work together as adsorbents and protective agents, binding bacterial toxins, reducing fluid loss, and providing a soothing coating to inflamed intestinal mucosa . Vitamin A acetate supports epithelial integrity and immune function during recovery from enteric infections .
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Neomycin Sulphate:
- Binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis
- Causes misreading of mRNA, leading to production of non-functional proteins and cell death
- Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, exerting its primary effect in the gut lumen
Streptomycin Sulphate:
- Also binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, blocking bacterial protein synthesis
- Acts synergistically with neomycin against gram-negative enteric pathogens
- Provides broader spectrum coverage when combined with neomycin
Sulphaguanidine:
- Competitively inhibits bacterial folate synthesis by blocking para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA)
- Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, providing high local concentrations in the gut
- Effective against a wide range of enteric bacteria, including E. coli and Salmonella spp.
Kaolin:
- Acts as an adsorbent, binding to bacterial toxins, endotoxins, and irritants in the gastrointestinal tract
- Provides a protective coating to inflamed intestinal mucosa
- Helps reduce fluid loss and firm stools
Pectin:
- Soluble fiber that absorbs water and helps firm stools
- Provides a soothing, protective coating to the intestinal lining
- Supports normal bowel function
Bismuth Subnitrate:
- Provides a protective coating to inflamed intestinal mucosa
- Has mild astringent properties that help reduce inflammation
- May have mild antibacterial activity against enteric pathogens
Vitamin A Acetate:
- Essential for maintaining the integrity of intestinal epithelial cells
- Supports immune function during recovery from infection
- Helps repair damaged intestinal mucosa
ANTIMICROBIAL SPECTRUM
ORO-ZONE is effective against a broad range of enteric pathogens:
Gram-Negative Bacteria:
- Escherichia coli - colibacillosis, enteritis
- Salmonella spp. - salmonellosis, paratyphoid infections
- Shigella spp.
- Klebsiella spp.
- Proteus spp.
Gram-Positive Bacteria:
- Staphylococcus spp. (variable sensitivity)
- Streptococcus spp.
INDICATIONS
ORO-ZONE is indicated for the treatment and control of gastrointestinal infections and diarrhea in poultry caused by neomycin, streptomycin, and sulphaguanidine-sensitive bacteria .
Disease Conditions:
- Bacterial Enteritis - inflammation of the intestines caused by bacterial pathogens
- Colibacillosis - E. coli infections affecting the gastrointestinal tract
- Salmonellosis - including paratyphoid infections in poultry
- Diarrhea and Scours - acute and chronic diarrhea of bacterial origin
- Secondary bacterial enteritis associated with viral or parasitic infections
- Nonspecific bacterial diarrhea in growing birds
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
ORO-ZONE is administered via drinking water or mixed with feed. For optimal results, fresh medicated water should be prepared daily. Shake well before use.
Recommended Dosage:
- Poultry (Broilers, Layers, Breeders): 12 g per 10-15 liters of drinking water (approximately 1 g per 1-1.5 liters) for 3-5 consecutive days
- Alternative Dosage (feed mixing): 12 g per 5-10 kg of feed, administered as the sole ration for 3-5 days
- Severe Infections: Double the dosage for the first 24 hours, then continue with standard dosage
- Treatment Duration: 3-5 consecutive days. For chronic conditions, extend up to 7 days if necessary
Administration Guidelines:
- Calculate total daily water consumption based on flock size, age, and environmental temperature
- Dissolve the required amount of ORO-ZONE in a small volume of water, then add to the main drinking water tank
- For use in automatic water proportioners, prepare stock solution according to manufacturer specifications
- Prepare fresh medicated water daily; discard any unused solution after 24 hours
- Ensure medicated water is the sole source of drinking water during treatment
- For best results, administer over 4-8 hours; may withhold water for 1-2 hours before treatment to encourage rapid consumption
- If symptoms persist beyond 3-4 days, consult a veterinarian
EFFICACY DATA
Combination Therapy Studies:
- A study examining antimicrobial therapies in chicks infected with Salmonella infantis found that neomycin-based combination therapies were effective in controlling infection .
- The combination of neomycin with other antimicrobials helped reduce the number of infected chicks compared to control groups .
Role of Adsorbents:
- Kaolin and pectin are well-established adsorbents that bind bacterial toxins and provide a protective coating to inflamed intestinal mucosa
- These components are particularly useful as supportive therapy in infectious diarrhea, helping to reduce fluid loss and promote recovery
DRUG INTERACTIONS
- Kaolin and pectin: Do not administer kaolin and pectin with lincomycin as they may inhibit the oral absorption of lincomycin
- Aminoglycosides: Concurrent use with other aminoglycosides (gentamicin, tobramycin) may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity
- Sulphonamides: May potentiate the effects of anticoagulants; monitor if used concurrently
- Vitamin A: No known significant interactions; compatible with most other feed additives
CONTRAINDICATIONS & PRECAUTIONS
- Egg production: Do not use in laying hens producing eggs for human consumption. Neomycin, streptomycin, and sulphaguanidine can accumulate in eggs .
- Hypersensitivity: Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to aminoglycosides (neomycin, streptomycin), sulfonamides, or any component
- Renal impairment: Use with caution in animals with impaired renal function; aminoglycosides are nephrotoxic
- Ruminants: Use with caution in ruminating animals; kaolin and pectin may interfere with rumen fermentation
- Withdrawal period: Observe the recommended withdrawal period to ensure consumer safety
