DESCRIPTION
TOLTRAZONE-3 is a broad-spectrum anticoccidial oral solution containing toltrazuril, a triazinone derivative with potent activity against all major Eimeria species affecting poultry. Toltrazuril is considered one of the most effective anticoccidial agents available, with activity against both asexual and sexual stages of the coccidian life cycle .
Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract caused by protozoa of the genus Eimeria. It is one of the most economically significant diseases in poultry production, causing reduced growth, poor feed conversion, increased mortality, and substantial economic losses worldwide . TOLTRAZONE-3 provides effective control through a unique mechanism of action that disrupts the development of coccidia at multiple stages .
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Toltrazuril acts by interfering with the nuclear division of coccidia, affecting the development of all intracellular stages (merozoites, schizonts, gametocytes). It disrupts the fine structure of the parasite's endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, leading to inhibition of nucleic acid and protein synthesis .
Unlike many anticoccidials that only target specific stages of the parasite life cycle, toltrazuril exhibits activity against both asexual and sexual stages, making it highly effective for both treatment and prevention of coccidiosis. It is active against all pathogenic Eimeria species in poultry .
ANTICOCCIDIAL SPECTRUM
TOLTRAZONE-3 is effective against all major Eimeria species affecting poultry:
Chickens:
- Eimeria tenella - caecal coccidiosis
- Eimeria necatrix - intestinal coccidiosis
- Eimeria acervulina - duodenal coccidiosis
- Eimeria maxima - mid-intestinal coccidiosis
- Eimeria brunetti - lower intestinal coccidiosis
- Eimeria mitis, Eimeria praecox
Turkeys:
- Eimeria adenoides, Eimeria meleagrimitis, Eimeria gallopavonis
Geese:
- Eimeria anseris, Eimeria nocens, Eimeria truncata
INDICATIONS
TOLTRAZONE-3 is indicated for the treatment and prevention of coccidiosis in poultry caused by Eimeria species sensitive to toltrazuril .
Chickens:
- Treatment of clinical coccidiosis caused by Eimeria species
- Prevention of coccidiosis in growing birds, especially during the critical 3-6 week period
- Control of coccidiosis outbreaks in broiler and layer flocks
Turkeys:
- Treatment of intestinal and caecal coccidiosis
Geese:
- Treatment of renal and intestinal coccidiosis
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
TOLTRAZONE-3 is administered via drinking water. For optimal results, fresh medicated water should be prepared daily.
Recommended Dosage:
- Chickens (Broilers, Layers, Breeders): 25 mg toltrazuril per kg body weight (equivalent to 0.83 ml of TOLTRAZONE-3 per kg body weight) for 2 consecutive days
- Turkeys: 25 mg toltrazuril per kg body weight (0.83 ml per kg) for 2 consecutive days
- Geese: 25 mg toltrazuril per kg body weight (0.83 ml per kg) for 2 consecutive days
- Drinking Water Concentration: 0.83 ml per liter of drinking water (providing 25 mg toltrazuril per liter) administered for 2 consecutive days
Simplified Dosing:
- For practical use: 1 ml per 1.2 liters of drinking water (approximately 1 ml per 1-1.5 liters) for 2 consecutive days
Treatment Schedule:
- Therapeutic Treatment: Administer for 2 consecutive days at the first signs of coccidiosis (bloody droppings, reduced feed intake, diarrhea)
- Preventive Treatment: For flocks with known coccidiosis risk, administer at 3-4 weeks of age for 2 consecutive days
- Severe Outbreaks: In cases of severe coccidiosis, a second 2-day treatment may be administered 5 days after the first treatment
Administration Guidelines:
- Calculate total daily water consumption based on flock size, age, and environmental temperature
- Dissolve the required amount of TOLTRAZONE-3 in a small volume of water, then add to the main drinking water tank
- For use in automatic water proportioners, prepare stock solution according to manufacturer specifications
- Prepare fresh medicated water daily; discard any unused solution after 24 hours
- Ensure medicated water is the sole source of drinking water during treatment
- For best results, administer over 4-8 hours; may withhold water for 1-2 hours before treatment to encourage rapid consumption
EFFICACY DATA
Clinical Efficacy:
- Toltrazuril is recognized as one of the most effective anticoccidial agents, with activity against all pathogenic Eimeria species
- Studies have shown that toltrazuril significantly reduces oocyst shedding, improves weight gain, and reduces mortality in infected birds
- The 2-day treatment protocol provides effective control with minimal stress to birds
Resistance Considerations:
- While toltrazuril remains highly effective, some studies have reported reduced susceptibility in certain Eimeria field isolates. A 2025 study published in Veterinary Medicine and Science evaluated the efficacy of toltrazuril against seven field isolates of Eimeria tenella in broiler chickens. The study found that toltrazuril showed varying efficacy depending on the isolate, with some isolates demonstrating reduced susceptibility .
- In the same study, sulphaclozine (a sulfonamide anticoccidial) showed resistance in all isolates tested, while toltrazuril remained effective against several isolates
- To preserve efficacy, toltrazuril should be used as part of a rotation program with other anticoccidials
