DESCRIPTION
AMPROZONE-90 is a high-concentration, broad-spectrum anticoccidial powder containing amprolium hydrochloride, a thiamine (vitamin B1) antagonist that selectively inhibits the growth and reproduction of coccidial parasites. It is widely used for the prevention and treatment of coccidiosis in poultry .
Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract caused by protozoa of the genus Eimeria. It is one of the most economically significant diseases in poultry production, causing reduced growth, poor feed conversion, increased mortality, and substantial economic losses worldwide . AMPROZONE-90 provides effective control through its unique mechanism of action that disrupts thiamine metabolism in the parasite .
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Amprolium acts as a thiamine (vitamin B1) antagonist. It competitively inhibits the uptake of thiamine by the coccidial parasite, thereby blocking the synthesis of thiamine pyrophosphate, an essential coenzyme for carbohydrate metabolism. Since the parasite cannot synthesize its own thiamine and must obtain it from the host, amprolium effectively starves the coccidia of this essential vitamin .
Unlike many anticoccidials that only target specific stages of the parasite life cycle, amprolium is primarily active against the first-generation schizonts (early asexual stages) of Eimeria species, preventing the development of clinical disease .
ANTICOCCIDIAL SPECTRUM
AMPROZONE-90 is effective against the following Eimeria species:
Chickens:
- Eimeria tenella - caecal coccidiosis
- Eimeria necatrix - intestinal coccidiosis
- Eimeria acervulina - duodenal coccidiosis
- Eimeria maxima - mid-intestinal coccidiosis
- Eimeria brunetti - lower intestinal coccidiosis
- Eimeria mitis, Eimeria praecox
Turkeys:
- Eimeria meleagrimitis, Eimeria adenoides, Eimeria gallopavonis
INDICATIONS
AMPROZONE-90 is indicated for the prevention and treatment of coccidiosis in poultry caused by Eimeria species sensitive to amprolium .
Chickens (Broilers, Layers, Breeders):
- Treatment of clinical coccidiosis
- Prevention of coccidiosis in growing birds
- Control of coccidiosis outbreaks in broiler and layer flocks
Turkeys:
- Treatment and prevention of intestinal coccidiosis
Other Poultry:
- Ducks, geese, quail, pheasants, and game birds
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
AMPROZONE-90 is administered via drinking water. For optimal results, fresh medicated water should be prepared daily.
Recommended Dosage - Treatment:
- Chickens: 0.024% amprolium solution (240 mg per liter) for 5-7 consecutive days
- Calculation: 267 g of AMPROZONE-90 per 1000 liters of drinking water (equivalent to 0.267 g per liter)
- Simplified Dosing: 1 g per 3-4 liters of drinking water for 5-7 days
Recommended Dosage - Prevention:
- Chickens: 0.0125% amprolium solution (125 mg per liter) as the sole source of drinking water
- Calculation: 139 g of AMPROZONE-90 per 1000 liters of drinking water (equivalent to 0.139 g per liter)
- Simplified Dosing: 1 g per 7-8 liters of drinking water for continuous use
Turkeys:
- Treatment: 0.024% amprolium solution (240 mg per liter) for 7 consecutive days
- Prevention: 0.0125% amprolium solution (125 mg per liter) as the sole source of drinking water
Administration Guidelines:
- Calculate total daily water consumption based on flock size, age, and environmental temperature
- Dissolve the required amount of AMPROZONE-90 in a small volume of water, then add to the main drinking water tank
- For use in automatic water proportioners, prepare stock solution according to manufacturer specifications
- Prepare fresh medicated water daily; discard any unused solution after 24 hours
- Ensure medicated water is the sole source of drinking water during treatment
- For best results, administer over 4-8 hours; may withhold water for 1-2 hours before treatment to encourage rapid consumption
- If no improvement is seen within 3 days, consult a veterinarian
EFFICACY DATA
Clinical Efficacy:
- Amprolium is one of the most widely used anticoccidials in poultry production due to its safety profile and efficacy against all major Eimeria species
- The 5-7 day treatment protocol effectively controls clinical coccidiosis and reduces oocyst shedding
- Amprolium is often used in combination with other anticoccidials for broader coverage
Resistance Considerations:
- Amprolium has been in use for over 50 years, and resistance has been reported in some Eimeria field isolates
- To preserve efficacy, amprolium should be used as part of a rotation program with other anticoccidials such as toltrazuril, diclazuril, or ionophores
- Veterinary consultation is recommended for developing an effective anticoccidial rotation program
CONTRAINDICATIONS & PRECAUTIONS
- Egg production: Do not use in laying hens producing eggs for human consumption
- Hypersensitivity: Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to amprolium
- Thiamine deficiency: Prolonged use may cause thiamine deficiency; supplementation with vitamin B1 may be considered during extended treatment
- Water quality: Do not use water containing high levels of calcium, as this may affect solubility

- When handling the product, avoid inhalation, oral exposure, and direct contact with skin or eyes
- Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, protected from direct sunlight
- Protect from moisture
- Use within 28 days after first opening
ADVERSE REACTIONS
- At recommended doses, amprolium is generally well tolerated in poultry
- High doses may cause thiamine deficiency symptoms (polioencephalomalacia)
- Occasional mild diarrhea or reduced water intake may occur
- If adverse reactions occur, discontinue use and consult a veterinarian
