DESCRIPTION
IMPAK is a liquid nutraceutical combining vitamin E, selenium, and vitamin B12, formulated for oral or injectable administration in poultry and livestock. Vitamin E and selenium work synergistically as essential components of the body's antioxidant defense system, protecting cell membranes from oxidative damage and preventing nutritional myopathies
Vitamin E (tocopherol) acts as a chain-breaking antioxidant, preventing lipid peroxidation in cell membranes. Selenium is an essential cofactor for glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), an enzyme that neutralizes harmful peroxides. Vitamin B12 supports red blood cell formation, nerve function, and energy metabolism .
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Vitamin E (dl-alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate):
- Acts as a chain-breaking antioxidant, protecting cell membranes from lipid peroxidation
- Converts free radicals into hydroperoxides, which are then detoxified by selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase
- Supports immune function, reproductive health, and nervous system integrity
Selenium (as Sodium Selenite):
- Essential component of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), which reduces hydrogen peroxide and organic peroxides to water and alcohols
- Supports selenoprotein synthesis, playing critical roles in redox regulation and antioxidant defense
- Deficiency is the most common cause of nutritional myopathy in poultry
Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin):
- Essential for red blood cell formation and prevention of anemia
- Supports normal nerve function and myelin synthesis
- Plays a critical role in energy metabolism and DNA synthesis
Synergistic Action:
- Vitamin E and selenium work together in a complementary manner: vitamin E prevents the initiation of lipid peroxidation, while selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase neutralizes existing peroxides
- This dual-action antioxidant system protects skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle from oxidative damage
- Vitamin B12 complements by supporting energy metabolism and nerve function during recovery
INDICATIONS
IMPAK is indicated for the prevention and treatment of vitamin E and selenium deficiencies in poultry and livestock .
Deficiency Conditions:
- Nutritional Myopathy - also known as white muscle disease or muscular dystrophy, characterized by skeletal (especially breast), cardiac, and smooth muscle degeneration. Lesions appear as pale foci or streaking of the musculature. Selenium deficiency is the most common cause
- Encephalomalacia (Crazy Chick Disease) - vitamin E deficiency-induced neurological disorder affecting 2-5 week old chicks, characterized by ataxia, head tremors, and paralysis
- Exudative Diathesis - characterized by subcutaneous edema, particularly in the breast, abdomen, and neck regions, resulting from increased capillary permeability
- Pancreatic Necrosis and Fibrosis - degeneration of pancreatic tissue due to selenium deficiency
- Reduced Fertility and Hatchability - in breeding flocks, deficiencies impair reproduction and embryo development
Key Indications:
- Prevention of Deficiency Diseases: Nutritional myopathy, encephalomalacia, and exudative diathesis in young birds
- Stress Management: Supports antioxidant defense during heat stress, vaccination, and disease recovery
- Immune Support: Enhances antibody production and immune cell function
- Reproductive Support: Improves fertility and hatchability in breeding flocks
- Recovery from Iron Dextran Toxicity: Vitamin E and selenium help mitigate oxidative damage from iron injections in piglets
- Growth and Performance: Supports normal growth and feed efficiency
SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE
Vitamin E and Selenium Deficiency in Poultry:
- According to the MSD Veterinary Manual, nutritional myopathy in chickens, turkeys, waterfowl, and ostriches is attributed to vitamin E/selenium deficiency. As in mammals, selenium deficiency is the most common cause. Vitamin E deficiency, when accompanied by a sulfur amino acid deficiency, causes nutritional myopathy in chicks by approximately 4 weeks of age
- Lesions of vitamin E/selenium deficiency have been reported in skeletal (especially breast), cardiac, and smooth (gizzard and intestine) muscle of ducks, turkeys, and chickens
- Arsenic, zinc, copper, and other metals are antagonistic to selenium, and exposure to these metals can precipitate outbreaks of nutritional myopathy
Prevention and Supplementation:
- In many parts of the world, poultry feeds contain added selenium at 0.1–0.3 ppm to prevent selenium deficiency and subsequent nutritional myopathy
- Vitamin E and selenium supplementation supports immune function and reproductive health
- Injectable and oral formulations of vitamin E and selenium are widely used in veterinary practice for the prevention and treatment of deficiency-related disorders
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
IMPAK can be administered via drinking water or by injection. For optimal results, fresh solution should be prepared daily when administering via water.
Oral Administration (Drinking Water):
- Poultry (Broilers, Layers, Breeders, Turkeys, Ducks, Geese): 0.5 - 1 ml per liter of drinking water for 3-6 consecutive days
- Prevention: 0.5 ml per liter of drinking water, administered 2-3 times per week or during stress periods
- Treatment of Deficiencies: 1 ml per liter of drinking water for 5-7 consecutive days
- Severe Deficiencies: Up to 1.5 ml per liter of drinking water for the first 3-5 days
Injection Administration:
- Poultry: Consult veterinarian for appropriate injection dosage and route (subcutaneous or intramuscular)
- Calves, Lambs, Kids: 1 ml per 10-15 kg body weight, administered intramuscularly
- Sheep, Goats: 0.5-1 ml per 10 kg body weight
- Piglets: 0.5-1 ml per animal for prevention of iron dextran toxicity
- Repeat dose after 1 month if necessary
Recommended Usage Periods:
- Broiler Chickens: Administer for 3-4 days during starter phase (0-14 days) and during periods of rapid growth or stress
- Layer Chickens: Administer for 3-5 days at the onset of lay and during peak production to support reproductive health
- Breeder Chickens: Administer for 5-7 days before and during the breeding season to improve fertility and hatchability
- Heat Stress: Administer during periods of high ambient temperature to support antioxidant defense
- Vaccination: Administer 1-2 days before and 2-3 days after vaccination to support immune response
- Disease Recovery: Administer during and for 3-5 days after antibiotic treatment
Administration Guidelines:
- For oral administration: Calculate total daily water consumption based on flock size, age, and environmental temperature
- Dissolve the required amount of IMPAK directly into the drinking water tank or mixing system
- For use in automatic water proportioners, adjust settings according to manufacturer specifications
- Prepare fresh medicated water daily; discard any unused solution after 24 hours
- For injection: Use aseptic technique; use sterile needles and syringes for each animal
- Avoid injection into blood vessels
