DESCRIPTION
QASLINK 4.4% is a water-soluble antibiotic powder containing lincomycin hydrochloride, a lincosamide antibiotic produced by Streptomyces lincolnensis. Lincomycin exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, interfering with peptidyl transferase activity and preventing peptide bond formation
This product is formulated for administration via drinking water in poultry and livestock for the control and treatment of specific bacterial infections caused by lincomycin-susceptible organisms
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Lincomycin acts by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds specifically to the 50S ribosomal subunit, interfering with the peptidyl transferase reaction and preventing peptide bond formation
This inhibition disrupts the production of essential proteins required for bacterial growth and replication. Depending on the sensitivity of microorganisms and the concentration of the active substance, the antibacterial action can be either bacteriostatic or bactericidal
Lincomycin is effective against gram-positive bacteria, anaerobic bacteria, and Mycoplasma species, but has no significant activity against gram-negative bacteria
INDICATIONS
QASLINK 4.4% is indicated for the control and treatment of infections caused by lincomycin-susceptible bacteria in poultry and swine
Broiler Chickens:
- Control and Treatment of Necrotic Enteritis caused by Clostridium perfringens susceptible to lincomycin
- Start medication as soon as the diagnosis of necrotic enteritis is confirmed
- Studies have demonstrated that lincomycin water medication is highly effective for treatment of necrotic enteritis, with 0% mortality in treated birds compared to 14% in non-medicated controls (P < 0.01)
Swine:
- Treatment of Swine Dysentery (Bloody Scours) caused by Brachyspira hyodysenteriae
- Treatment and Metaphylaxis of Enzootic Pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae
- The presence of disease in the group should be confirmed before metaphylactic treatment
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
QASLINK 4.4% is administered via drinking water. For optimal results, fresh medicated water should be prepared daily.
Recommended Dosage - Broiler Chickens:
- Drinking Water Concentration: Administer at a dose rate of 64 mg of lincomycin per gallon of drinking water (approximately 16.9 mg per liter)
- Product Calculation: Each kilogram of QASLINK 4.4% (44 g lincomycin) medicates approximately 2,600 liters of drinking water at the recommended concentration of 16.9 mg/L
- Alternative Dosage (body weight): 5 mg lincomycin per kg body weight per day for chickens (based on necrotic enteritis treatment)
- Treatment Duration: 7 consecutive days
- If improvement is not noted within 24-48 hours, consult a licensed veterinarian to re-evaluate the diagnosis
Recommended Dosage - Swine:
- Swine Dysentery: Administer at a dose rate of 250 mg of lincomycin per gallon of drinking water
- Enzootic Pneumonia: 10 mg lincomycin per kg body weight per day (equivalent to 25 mg of product per kg body weight per day) for 21 consecutive days
- Treatment Duration (Dysentery): Minimum of 5 consecutive days beyond the disappearance of symptoms (bloody stools), up to a maximum of 10 consecutive days
Preparation of Medicated Water:
- Dissolve the required amount of QASLINK 4.4% in a small volume of water, then add to the main drinking water tank
- For use in automatic water proportioners, prepare stock solution according to manufacturer specifications
- Fresh medicated drinking water should be provided daily
- Discard medicated drinking water if not used within 2 days
Administration Guidelines:
- Ensure medicated water is the sole source of drinking water during treatment
- To ensure proper dosing, body weight should be determined as accurately as possible to avoid underdosing
- Water consumption may be affected by the severity of illness; if water intake is insufficient, alternative treatment routes should be considered
EFFICACY DATA
Necrotic Enteritis in Broilers:
- A study published in Poultry Science (1983) evaluated the efficacy of 16.9 mg lincomycin per liter of drinking water for the treatment of necrotic enteritis in 743 broiler chickens. Mortality attributed to necrotic enteritis was 0% in lincomycin-treated birds and 14% in non-medicated control birds (P < 0.01)
- The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of lincomycin against the test Clostridium perfringens isolate was 0.156 µg/mL, indicating high susceptibility
Antibiotic Resistance Monitoring:
- A 2010 study examining the effect of antibiotics in a subclinical necrotic enteritis model found that while C. perfringens strains were uniformly susceptible to amoxicillin and tylosin, an extended frequency distribution range of MICs for lincomycin was observed, indicating acquired resistance in 36 out of 51 isolates tested
- This highlights the importance of susceptibility testing and responsible antibiotic use to preserve lincomycin efficacy
WARNING: SPECIES-SPECIFIC CONTRAINDICATIONS
CRITICAL SAFETY WARNING: DO NOT ADMINISTER TO SENSITIVE SPECIES
- Lincomycin can cause severe gastrointestinal effects, including potentially fatal digestive disturbances, in horses, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and ruminants (cattle, sheep, goats)
- Do not allow these species access to water containing lincomycin
- For rabbits, hamsters, and guinea pigs, ingestion may result in severe gastrointestinal effects
CONTRAINDICATIONS & PRECAUTIONS
- Hypersensitivity: Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to lincomycin or other lincosamide antibiotics
- Sensitive species: Do not allow rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, chinchillas, horses, or ruminants access to water containing this product
- Egg production: Not for use in laying hens producing eggs for human consumption. Do not use in layer and breeder chickens
- Pregnant swine: The safety of lincomycin has not been demonstrated for pregnant swine or swine intended for breeding
- Liver and kidney dysfunction: Do not use in animals with impaired hepatic or renal function
- Drug interactions: Do not use the water treatment and feed treatment simultaneously. Antagonism may occur with macrolides such as erythromycin due to competition for binding at the 50S ribosomal subunit
- Resistance: To reduce the development of antimicrobial resistance and maintain effectiveness, use this antibiotic prudently based on susceptibility testing
- Keep out of reach of children
- When handling the product, avoid inhalation, oral exposure, and direct contact with skin or eyes. Use appropriate protective equipment (dust mask, gloves, safety goggles)
- Store in a dry place below 25°C, protected from direct sunlight and moisture
- Use within 28 days after first opening
ADVERSE REACTIONS
- Swine: Occasionally, swine may develop diarrhea and/or swelling of the anus within the first 2 days after the onset of treatment. Rarely, some pigs may show reddening of the skin and irritable behavior. These conditions are self-correcting within 5-8 days without discontinuing lincomycin treatment
- Poultry: At recommended doses, lincomycin is generally well tolerated in broiler chickens
- If adverse reactions occur, discontinue use and consult a veterinarian
WITHDRAWAL PERIOD
- Broiler Chickens: No withdrawal period required when treated at the approved level of 64 mg per gallon of drinking water
- Swine: No withdrawal period required when treated at the approved level of 250 mg per gallon of drinking water
