DESCRIPTION
COLUMBA is an inactivated oil-adjuvanted vaccine for the active immunization of pigeons against paramyxovirosis (Newcastle disease in pigeons). The vaccine contains the inactivated pigeon paramyxovirus type 1 (PPMV-1), strain 988M-ca, which provides effective protection against this highly contagious viral disease [citation:1][citation:6].
Pigeon Paramyxovirus Type 1 (PPMV-1) is an antigenic and host variant of the Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) that can infect pigeons of all ages and cause severe economic losses in the pigeon industry [citation:5][citation:8]. The disease is characterized by neurological signs, diarrhea, respiratory distress, and high mortality rates, particularly in young birds [citation:4].
INDICATIONS
COLUMBA is indicated for the active immunization of pigeons against paramyxovirus type 1 (PPMV-1) infection [citation:1][citation:6].
Vaccination is recommended for all pigeons, particularly those participating in competitions and exhibitions, as it is mandatory in many regions [citation:4]. The vaccine helps to:
- Reduce the severity of clinical signs associated with paramyxovirus infection [citation:9]
- Decrease mortality during outbreaks [citation:9]
- Shorten the virus excretion period after infection, reducing disease spread [citation:9]
- Provide long-lasting immunity with annual revaccination [citation:9]
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
Dosage:
- 0.3 ml per pigeon, regardless of age or size [citation:3][citation:7][citation:9]
- Each vial (15 ml) contains 50 doses
Route of Administration:
- Subcutaneous injection in the back of the neck [citation:2][citation:3]
- Inject with a sterile needle (0.7 x 25 mm) inserted parallel to the cervical spine, directed toward the back [citation:4][citation:9]
- Avoid injection too close to the head or nape region [citation:4]
Preparation Before Use:
- Warm the vaccine to room temperature (approximately +22°C) before administration [citation:9]
- Shake the vial thoroughly before use [citation:9]
- Repeat shaking from time to time during the application process [citation:9]
- Use only clean, sterile syringes and needles [citation:9]
Vaccination Schedule:
- Basic Immunization (Young Pigeons): First vaccination at 3-5 weeks of age [citation:3][citation:7][citation:9]
- Second Vaccination (Booster): At 9-12 weeks of age (4 weeks after primary vaccination) [citation:3][citation:9]
- Onset of Immunity: 14 days after the last injection [citation:9]
- Duration of Immunity: 12 months after complete primary immunization [citation:9]
- Annual Revaccination: All adult pigeons should be revaccinated annually [citation:3][citation:4]
- Timing for Competitions: Revaccinate at least 3 weeks before the start of the flying or exhibition season [citation:3][citation:9]
- Breeding Timing: Revaccinate no later than 5 weeks before mating [citation:9]
CONTRAINDICATIONS & PRECAUTIONS
- Do not vaccinate unhealthy birds - only healthy pigeons should be vaccinated [citation:9]
- Avoid accidental self-injection - the oil adjuvant may cause adverse reactions in humans [citation:9]
- Do not freeze - freezing destroys the vaccine emulsion [citation:3][citation:9]
- Use within 4 hours after broaching - discard any unused vaccine after this time [citation:9]
- Keep out of reach of children [citation:9]
- Do not use after the stated expiry date [citation:9]
- Can be administered simultaneously with pigeon pox vaccine using the follicle method (separate injection sites) [citation:9]
ADVERSE REACTIONS
- A small, temporary swelling may develop at the injection site, which typically resolves within a few weeks [citation:7]
- The vaccine is formulated to cause no swelling, pain, or adverse effects when administered correctly [citation:7]
- No significant depression of spirit, appetite, or flying ability has been reported [citation:7]
- If adverse reactions occur, consult a veterinarian
WITHDRAWAL PERIOD
- Meat: Zero days - no withdrawal period required [citation:1][citation:6][citation:10]
- The vaccine does not leave harmful residues in meat products
STORAGE
- Store refrigerated at 2°C - 8°C (36°F - 46°F) [citation:3][citation:9]
- Do not freeze - freezing inactivates the vaccine [citation:3][citation:9]
- Protect from light [citation:3][citation:9]
- Store in a dry place [citation:3]
- Keep container tightly closed when not in use
- Shelf-life: 18 months from manufacturing date when stored properly [citation:3]
