DESCRIPTION
LEVOXYZONE is a broad-spectrum combination anthelmintic oral suspension containing Levamisole HCl and Oxyclozanide. This synergistic combination provides comprehensive control against both nematodes (roundworms) and trematodes (liver flukes) in livestock [citation:1].
Levamisole HCl is an imidazothiazole anthelmintic that acts as a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonist. It disrupts neuromuscular transmission in susceptible nematodes, causing rapid paralysis and expulsion from the host within 24 hours [citation:1]. Levamisole is effective against both mature and developing immature stages of gastrointestinal roundworms and lungworms [citation:2].
Oxyclozanide is a salicylanilide anthelmintic that works by uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondria of flukes. This action interferes with the parasite's energy metabolism (ATP synthesis), leading to its death [citation:1]. Oxyclozanide is primarily active against adult liver flukes present in the bile ducts [citation:2].
The combination of these two anthelmintics provides a wider spectrum of parasite control and serves as an effective alternative treatment in cases where resistance has developed to other anthelmintic classes [citation:1][citation:7].
INDICATIONS
LEVOXYZONE is indicated for the treatment and control of the following parasitic infections in livestock:
Gastrointestinal Roundworms (Nematodes):
- Haemonchus spp. (barber's pole worm) [citation:2][citation:4]
- Ostertagia spp. (brown stomach worm) [citation:2][citation:4]
- Trichostrongylus spp. (black scour worm) [citation:1][citation:2]
- Cooperia spp. [citation:1][citation:2]
- Nematodirus spp. [citation:2][citation:3]
- Bunostomum spp. (hookworm) [citation:2][citation:8]
- Oesophagostomum spp. (nodular worm) [citation:2][citation:8]
- Chabertia spp. [citation:2]
Lungworms:
- Dictyocaulus spp. (lungworm) [citation:2][citation:5]
Liver Flukes (Trematodes):
- Fasciola hepatica (adult liver fluke) [citation:2][citation:5][citation:8]
- Fasciola gigantica (adult giant liver fluke) [citation:8]
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
For oral administration only. Shake the container well before use to ensure the active ingredients are homogeneously suspended [citation:4]. Use a properly calibrated drenching gun for accurate dosing. Body weight should be determined as accurately as possible to ensure proper dosage [citation:4].
Recommended Dosage:
- Cattle: 5 ml per 10 kg body weight (equivalent to 7.5 mg levamisole and 15 mg oxyclozanide per kg) [citation:1][citation:2][citation:3]
- Sheep & Goats: 1 ml per 2 kg body weight (equivalent to 7.5 mg levamisole and 15 mg oxyclozanide per kg) [citation:2][citation:3]
Dosing Guidelines:
- For cattle weighing more than 640 kg, administer 1 ml per 8 kg body weight [citation:2]
- For severe infections, repeat dosing may be required after 21 days [citation:5]
- Do not exceed the recommended dosage [citation:4]
WITHDRAWAL PERIODS
- Meat (Cattle & Sheep): 5 to 28 days depending on local regulations (common withdrawal: 5-14 days) [citation:2][citation:4][citation:8]
- Milk (Cattle & Sheep): Do not use in lactating animals producing milk for human consumption [citation:2][citation:4][citation:5] — Oxyclozanide typically requires 5-7 days withdrawal [citation:9]
PRECAUTIONS & CONTRAINDICATIONS
- Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to levamisole, oxyclozanide, or any other ingredients [citation:1]
- Do not use within 14 days before or after treatment with organophosphorus compounds [citation:2][citation:4][citation:5]
- Do not use concurrently with pyrantel or morantel [citation:1]
- Resistance Warning: Frequent and repeated use of anthelmintics from the same class may lead to resistance. Veterinary advice should be sought on appropriate dosing programs [citation:4]
- Operator Safety: Wear gloves while handling this product. Pregnant women should avoid handling. Wash hands thoroughly after use. If accidental ingestion occurs, seek medical advice immediately. If symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or abdominal discomfort occur, seek medical attention [citation:4]
