DESCRIPTION
ECTOZONE-100 is a high-purity ectoparasiticide powder containing Trichlorfon (also known as Metrifonate), a broad-spectrum organophosphate compound with potent insecticidal, acaricidal, and larvicidal properties . Trichlorfon was introduced by Bayer in the 1950s and remains an effective treatment for external parasite control in livestock and poultry .
Mechanism of Action: Trichlorfon acts as an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor . It binds irreversibly to the active site of the acetylcholinesterase enzyme, preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine (ACh) at nerve synapses and neuromuscular junctions . This leads to accumulation of acetylcholine, causing continuous nerve impulse transmission, hyperexcitation, spastic paralysis, and eventual death of the parasite . The compound works through both contact and stomach action against susceptible parasites .
Spectrum of Activity: ECTOZONE-100 is effective against a wide range of external parasites including ticks, lice, mites, fleas, mosquitoes, and fly larvae . Trichlorfon is particularly effective against various livestock myiases such as maggots from warble flies (Hypoderma spp.), human bot flies (Dermatobia hominis), and screwworm flies .
INDICATIONS
ECTOZONE-100 is indicated for the treatment and control of the following ectoparasitic infestations in livestock, poultry, and companion animals :
- Cattle, Buffalo, Sheep, Goats: Tick infestation, lice, mange mites, horn flies, and cattle grubs (warble flies)
- Swine (Pigs): Lice and mange mites
- Poultry: Lice, mites (including red mites Dermanyssus gallinae), fleas, and fly control in poultry houses
- Horses: Lice and fly control; also effective against horse bot flies (Gasterophilus spp.) when administered orally
- Dogs and Cats: Fleas, ticks, lice, and mites (used in shampoos, soaps, sprays, and powders)
- Humpsore: Treatment of humpsore in cattle
- Fish: Control of lice and external parasites in fish
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
For external/topical use only. Prepare fresh solution before each application. Do not use alkaline water for dilution as it increases toxicity by converting trichlorfon to the more toxic dichlorvos .
Recommended Dosages for External Use:
| Species | Indication | Dosage |
|---|
| Cattle, Sheep, Goats | Ticks, Lice, Mites, Flies | 2 g per liter of water (spray or dip) |
| Poultry | Lice, Mites, Fleas | 2 g per liter of water (spray application) |
| Dogs | Fleas, Ticks, Lice, Mites | 1500 ppm (1.5 g per liter) in bath water |
| Cattle | Humpsore | 10 g per 0.5 liter water (wash affected area) or mix with vaseline for topical application |
| Fish | Lice of Fish | 10 g per 250 ml water per 2 decimal ponds of 3 feet depth |
Dipping and Spraying:
- Dip Application: Prepare a 1500 ppm solution (1.5 g per liter) for dipping cattle, sheep, and goats
- Spray Application: Dissolve 2 g per liter of water and apply evenly over the entire body of the animal, ensuring thorough coverage of affected areas
- Repeat Treatment: Repeat application after 21 days for complete parasite life cycle control
- Pour-on Application: For cattle and sheep, 2-10 mg per kg body weight can be applied as a pour-on for fly and lice control
WITHDRAWAL PERIODS
- Cattle, Sheep, Goats, Swine (Meat): 28 days
- Horses (Meat): 28 days
- Milk: Do not use in lactating animals producing milk for human consumption — residues can affect milk color and taste
- Poultry (Meat): Consult local regulations (varies by country)
- Eggs: Not for use in laying hens producing eggs for human consumption
- Fish: 500 degree days (temperature-dependent withdrawal)
PRECAUTIONS & CONTRAINDICATIONS
- Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to organophosphates
- Do not use in pregnant animals, especially during the last third of gestation
- Do not use in debilitated, weak, or malnourished animals, or those with heart disease or gastroenteritis
- Do not use in cats younger than 1 year
- Do not use in poultry species such as geese and ducks, which are highly sensitive
- Do not use in fish species such as shrimp, crab, freshwater white scorpion, and scaleless fish
- Do not use with alkaline drugs or alkaline water, as this can convert trichlorfon to the more toxic dichlorvos
- Do not use concurrently with other organophosphates, carbamates, levamisole, morantel, pyrantel, or cholinesterase inhibitors
- Operator Safety: Trichlorfon is absorbed through the skin and can cause organophosphate poisoning in humans . Wear protective gloves, goggles, and impervious clothing when handling . Avoid inhaling dust or spray mist. Wash thoroughly after use .
- Toxic Symptoms: Overdose may cause salivation (drooling), lacrimation (excessive tearing), miosis (constricted pupils), muscle tremors, abdominal pain, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, and coma .
- Antidote: In case of poisoning, administer atropine sulfate (cattle: 0.6 mg/kg; sheep: 1.0 mg/kg; horses: 0.1 mg/kg; dogs and cats: 0.3 mg/kg) and pralidoxime (2-PAM) at 20-50 mg/kg .
- Environmental Precautions: Trichlorfon is toxic to aquatic organisms and dung beetles . Do not contaminate water sources. Dispose of empty containers properly .
- Store in a cool, dry place in tightly closed containers. Protect from moisture and alkaline materials .
- Keep out of reach of children.
