DESCRIPTION
Impak is a nutraceutical formulation combining Vitamin E, Selenium, and Vitamin B12 for parenteral or oral administration in livestock. This synergistic combination supports antioxidant defense mechanisms, immune function, and energy metabolism in cattle, sheep, and goats .
Vitamin E and Selenium: Vitamin E and selenium work synergistically as key components of the body's antioxidant defense system . Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that acts as a chain-breaking antioxidant, protecting cell membranes from oxidative damage caused by free radicals . Selenium is an essential trace element that serves as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase (GPx), an enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides . Together, they help maintain cellular integrity and prevent oxidative stress, which is particularly important during periods of metabolic challenge such as the transition period in dairy cows .
Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin): Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin essential for normal metabolic function. It acts as a coenzyme in two critical metabolic pathways: the conversion of methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA (involved in carbohydrate and fat metabolism) and the conversion of homocysteine to methionine (involved in protein synthesis and methylation reactions) . Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to reduced appetite, poor growth, and impaired immune function .
Research Findings: Studies on the administration of Vitamin E and selenium combinations to transition dairy cows have demonstrated significant benefits. Research indicates that injection of Vitamin E and selenium increases serum Vitamin E concentration and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) at calving day and day 7 and 14 postpartum, increases serum selenium concentration and glutathione peroxidase activity, and increases blood neutrophil counts at calving day . Furthermore, the greatest incidence of retained placenta and mastitis was observed in control groups that did not receive supplementation, suggesting that this combination may help reduce the risk of these common transition period disorders .
INDICATIONS
Impak is indicated for the prevention and treatment of the following conditions in livestock:
