DESCRIPTION
DINATUR is a non-antibiotic internal teat sealant formulated for administration at drying-off in dairy cows. It is designed to create a physical barrier within the teat canal, preventing the entry of mastitis-causing pathogens during the dry period when the natural keratin plug may be incomplete or absent [citation:8].
Mechanism of Action: The combination of propylene glycol and glycerol forms a viscous, malleable barrier that seals the teat canal. This physical plug mimics and reinforces the natural keratin plug that forms during mammary gland involution [citation:6]. Studies have shown that more than 50% of teats remain open one week after dry-off, and 23% remain open six weeks after dry-off, highlighting the importance of an artificial teat sealant in preventing new infections during this vulnerable period [citation:8].
Role of Vitamin E (α-Tocopherol): Research has demonstrated that the combination of an internal teat sealant with α-tocopherol (Vitamin E) provides significantly better preventive effects against new intramammary infections compared to sealant or antibiotic alone [citation:2][citation:4]. A study evaluating dry cow therapy reported that treatment with antibiotic + sealant + α-tocopherol (group AST) achieved the lowest new intramammary infection rate (12.5%) compared to control (47.5%), sealant alone (24.7%), and antibiotic alone (34.6%) [citation:2][citation:4].
Demulcent Properties: Glycerol and propylene glycol function as demulcents—soothing materials that protect and lubricate mucosal membranes. They help thicken, stabilize, and strengthen the protective film within the teat canal, forming a physical barrier against pathogens [citation:3].
Research on Propylene Glycol and Glycerin in Teat Sealants: Recent research on novel teat sealant formulations has evaluated mixtures based on vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol as effective carriers for antimicrobial agents. Studies have demonstrated that such mixtures can effectively deliver active ingredients and maintain their biocidal properties against mastitis pathogens including Escherichia coli and Streptococcus agalactiae [citation:1][citation:5][citation:7].
