BIORUM Probiotic
Product Name: BIORUM
Type: Probiotic (Live Yeast Powder)
COMPOSITION
DESCRIPTION
BIORUM is a high-potency live yeast probiotic containing Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a well-researched yeast strain widely used as a feed additive in livestock and poultry production . Saccharomyces cerevisiae has received considerable attention in recent decades as a natural alternative to antibiotics, particularly following the ban on antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) in many countries .
What Makes Saccharomyces cerevisiae a Probiotic? Saccharomyces cerevisiae is recognized for its ability to survive passage through the gastrointestinal tract, tolerating acidic conditions and bile salts while maintaining viability . Studies have demonstrated that S. cerevisiae strains can tolerate gastric juice and bile salt concentrations up to 2.0%, ensuring sufficient numbers reach the lower intestine where they exert their probiotic effects .
Mechanisms of Action:
1. Competitive Exclusion of Pathogens: One of the primary mechanisms by which S. cerevisiae benefits livestock and poultry is through competitive exclusion . Pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli must adhere to the gut epithelial cells to colonize and cause disease. However, with dietary supplementation of S. cerevisiae, pathogenic bacteria bind to the yeast cell surface instead, preventing their attachment to enterocytes . The yeast cells, along with the attached bacteria, are subsequently cleared from the gut .
2. Stabilization of Gut Microbiota: Saccharomyces cerevisiae supplementation helps stabilize the intestinal microbiota by creating a favorable environment for beneficial bacteria . In pigs, it has been shown to increase populations of fiber-degrading bacteria, leading to enhanced production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) which serve as an energy source for gut epithelial cells and the animal .
3. Improved Gut Integrity: Live yeast supplementation has been shown to enhance intestinal morphology by increasing villus height and the villus-height-to-crypt-depth ratio . These structural improvements maximize the surface area available for nutrient absorption, leading to better feed efficiency .
4. Immune System Modulation: Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells and their fermentation metabolites regulate immune system function by increasing cytokine and chemokine production by immune cells and enhancing the phagocytic activity of neutrophils and macrophages . In pig diets, S. cerevisiae augments mucosal immunity by increasing IgM and IgA activity against pathogens .
5. Reduction of Gut pH: Supplementation with S. cerevisiae decreases gut pH through the secretion of acetic acid and lactic acid, which creates an environment detrimental to the survival of pathogens .
6. Antioxidant Properties: Saccharomyces cerevisiae upregulates the expression of enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants, helping prevent damage to cell membranes, proteins, and nucleic acids caused by oxidative stress .
EFFICACY DATA
Poultry Research: A 2023 review on the application of probiotic yeasts in poultry feed reported that dietary supplementation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae improves body weight gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR), egg weight, fertility, hatchability, and carcass yield . The review also noted enhanced immune system function and overall health .
Swine Research (2024): A large-scale commercial trial involving approximately 27,000 pigs across 17 farms evaluated the effects of live Saccharomyces cerevisiae supplementation . Results demonstrated: improved feed conversion ratio with a reduction of 0.06 points; significantly increased average daily gain by 2.6%; and pigs reached final body weight three days faster . The trial also showed a return on investment of 4.7:1, with a gain of approximately 3€ per pig .
Research on Energy Metabolism (2022): A metabolic chamber study evaluating finishing pigs demonstrated that live S. cerevisiae supplementation resulted in a more efficient use of metabolizable energy, with an increased coefficient of metabolizable energy retention of 1.6% under thermoneutral conditions . Under heat stress conditions (28°C), the improvement was even greater at 5.5% .
Ruminant Research: In dairy cows, Saccharomyces cerevisiae supplementation has been shown to lower ruminal redox potential (Eh), creating a more favorable environment for strictly anaerobic bacteria such as cellulolytic and lactate-utilizing bacteria . This helps maintain ruminal pH above 6 and reduces the risk of subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) .
INDICATIONS
