DESCRIPTION
SCOUR ZONE is a comprehensive, broad-spectrum oral suspension specifically formulated for the treatment and management of gastrointestinal infections (scours) in poultry and livestock. This multi-action formulation combines systemic and locally acting antibacterials with adsorbents, antispasmodics, and vitamins to address both the infectious causes of diarrhea and its clinical consequences .
Scours (neonatal diarrhea) in young animals can be caused by a variety of bacterial pathogens including E. coli, Salmonella spp., and other enteropathogens, leading to significant morbidity, mortality, and economic losses. SCOUR ZONE is designed to provide comprehensive therapy by combining multiple mechanisms of action .
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Antibacterial Components:
- Sulphadiazine and Sulphadimidine: These systemic sulfonamides inhibit bacterial folate synthesis by competitively blocking para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), disrupting nucleic acid production. They provide broad-spectrum activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria including E. coli, Salmonella, Pasteurella, and Streptococcus species
- Neomycin Sulphate: A locally acting aminoglycoside antibiotic that is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It exerts its bactericidal effect by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis. It is particularly effective against E. coli and other enteric pathogens in the gut lumen
Adsorbent and Protective Components:
- Kaolin: A naturally occurring aluminum silicate that acts as an adsorbent, binding to bacterial toxins and irritants in the gastrointestinal tract, facilitating their elimination in feces . It also provides a protective coating to inflamed intestinal mucosa
- Pectin: A soluble fiber that absorbs water, helps firm stools, and provides a soothing, protective coating to the intestinal lining
Antispasmodic Component:
- Hyoscine methyl bromide: An anticholinergic agent that reduces intestinal smooth muscle spasm and motility, decreasing abdominal pain and cramping associated with enteritis . It helps slow transit time, allowing for better absorption of nutrients and fluids .
Vitamin Support:
- Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) and Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin): Essential B vitamins that may be depleted during diarrhea due to malabsorption and increased metabolic demand. They support energy metabolism, nerve function, and recovery .
INDICATIONS
SCOUR ZONE is indicated for the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal infections and associated diarrhea in poultry and livestock .
Target Pathogens:
- Escherichia coli - neonatal colibacillosis, enteritis
- Salmonella spp. - salmonellosis, paratyphoid infections
- Pasteurella spp.
- Streptococcus spp. and Staphylococcus spp.
- Clostridium spp. - enterotoxemia (partial activity)
Disease Conditions:
- Neonatal diarrhea (scours) of bacterial origin in poultry and young livestock
- Enteritis and enterotoxemia caused by E. coli, Salmonella spp., and other enteropathogens
- Scour/pneumonia complex in young livestock
- Bacterial gastroenteritis in poultry, calves, lambs, kids, piglets, and other species
- Secondary bacterial enteritis following viral or parasitic infections
PHARMACOKINETIC PROPERTIES
- Sulfonamides: Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, widely distributed throughout body tissues. Achieve therapeutic concentrations in blood and tissues within 2-4 hours. Excreted primarily in urine.
- Neomycin: Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (<3%), exerting its primary bactericidal effect in the gut lumen. Excreted almost completely in feces.
- Kaolin and Pectin: Not absorbed; act locally within the intestinal tract and are eliminated in feces.
- Hyoscine: Partially absorbed; acts both locally and systemically to reduce intestinal motility.
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
SCOUR ZONE is administered orally. SHAKE WELL BEFORE USE. For optimal results, administer as soon as signs of diarrhea appear.
Recommended Dosage:
- Initial Dose: 1-2 ml per kg body weight (first administration)
- Maintenance Dose: 0.5-1 ml per kg body weight, administered twice daily (morning and evening)
- Treatment Duration: 3-5 consecutive days or for 24 hours after symptoms resolve. For salmonellosis and bacterial pneumonia, continue for at least 5 days .
Species-Specific Dosing Guidelines:
- Poultry (Chickens, Turkeys, Ducks): 0.5-1 ml per liter of drinking water, or individual dosing as above for 3-5 days
- Calves, Foals: 20-40 ml per animal twice daily for 3-5 days
- Lambs, Kids: 5-10 ml per animal twice daily for 3-5 days
- Piglets: 2-5 ml per animal twice daily for 3-5 days
Administration Guidelines:
- Shake the bottle thoroughly before each use to ensure uniform suspension of ingredients
- For individual treatment, administer directly into the mouth using a dosing syringe
- For flock/herd treatment, administer via drinking water; ensure all animals have adequate access
- Provide fresh, clean water in addition to medicated water
- In cases of severe dehydration, consider additional fluid and electrolyte therapy
- If symptoms persist beyond 3-4 days, consult a veterinarian
EFFICACY DATA
Combination Therapy in Salmonella Infections:
- Research has demonstrated that combination therapy with antimicrobial agents (including sulfadiazine/trimethoprim) followed by restoration of normal intestinal microflora can effectively reduce Salmonella infection rates in chickens .
- Studies show that when only antimicrobials are given, salmonellae may rapidly reappear in the intestines when therapy is stopped, highlighting the importance of comprehensive gut health support .
- The inclusion of adsorbents like kaolin and pectin helps remove bacterial toxins and protect the intestinal lining, supporting recovery .
Role of Kaolin and Pectin:
- Kaolin and pectin are well-established adsorbents that bind bacterial toxins and provide a protective coating to inflamed intestinal mucosa
- These components are particularly useful as supportive therapy in infectious diarrhea, helping to reduce fluid loss and promote recovery
