DESCRIPTION
LINKZONE-4.4 is a water-soluble antibiotic powder containing lincomycin hydrochloride, a lincosamide antibiotic produced by Streptomyces lincolnensis [citation:3]. Lincomycin exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, interfering with the peptidyl transferase reaction and preventing peptide bond formation [citation:1].
This product is formulated for administration via drinking water in poultry for the control of necrotic enteritis, a severe intestinal disease caused by Clostridium perfringens [citation:1][citation:5].
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Lincomycin acts by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds specifically to the 50S ribosomal subunit, interfering with the peptidyl transferase reaction and preventing peptide bond formation [citation:1][citation:4]. This inhibition disrupts the production of essential proteins required for bacterial growth and replication. Depending on the sensitivity of microorganisms and the concentration of the active substance, the antibacterial action can be either bacteriostatic or bactericidal [citation:4].
Lincomycin exhibits primarily bacteriostatic activity against susceptible organisms, with bactericidal activity at higher concentrations. It is effective against gram-positive bacteria, anaerobic bacteria, and Mycoplasma species [citation:3].
INDICATIONS
LINKZONE-4.4 is indicated for the control and treatment of necrotic enteritis in broiler chickens caused by Clostridium perfringens susceptible to lincomycin [citation:1][citation:5].
Target Pathogen:
- Clostridium perfringens - causative agent of necrotic enteritis [citation:5][citation:8]
Disease Conditions:
- Necrotic Enteritis - characterized by intestinal necrosis, diarrhea, reduced feed intake, and increased mortality in broiler flocks [citation:5][citation:8]
- Start medication as soon as the diagnosis of necrotic enteritis is confirmed [citation:5][citation:9]
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
LINKZONE-4.4 is administered via drinking water. For optimal results, fresh medicated water should be prepared daily [citation:1][citation:6].
Recommended Dosage:
- Drinking Water Concentration: Administer at a dose rate of 64 mg of lincomycin per gallon of drinking water (approximately 16.9 mg per liter) [citation:1][citation:5]
- Calculation: Each kilogram of LINKZONE-4.4 (44 g lincomycin) medicates approximately 2,600 liters of drinking water at the recommended concentration of 16.9 mg/L
- Alternative Dosage (body weight): 3-6 mg lincomycin per kg body weight per day (equivalent to 7.5-15 g of product per 1000 kg body weight per day) [citation:4][citation:8]
- Treatment Duration: 7 consecutive days [citation:1][citation:5]
Preparation of Medicated Water:
- Dissolve the required amount of LINKZONE-4.4 in a small volume of water, then add to the main drinking water tank [citation:5]
- For use in automatic water proportioners, prepare stock solution according to manufacturer specifications [citation:1][citation:6]
- Fresh medicated drinking water should be provided daily [citation:1][citation:6]
- Discard medicated drinking water if not used within 2 days [citation:5][citation:9]
Administration Guidelines:
- Ensure medicated water is the sole source of drinking water during treatment [citation:4][citation:8]
- If improvement is not noted within 24-48 hours, consult a licensed veterinarian to re-evaluate the diagnosis [citation:5][citation:9]
- To ensure proper dosing, body weight should be determined as accurately as possible to avoid underdosing [citation:4][citation:8]
- Water consumption may be affected by the severity of illness; if water intake is insufficient, alternative treatment routes should be considered [citation:4]
- After water medication is discontinued, a control program may be followed by feeding lincomycin premix at 2 grams lincomycin per ton of complete feed [citation:5][citation:9]
WITHDRAWAL PERIOD
- Meat (Broiler Chickens): Zero days - no withdrawal period required when treated at the approved level of 64 mg per gallon of drinking water [citation:1][citation:5]
- Eggs: Not for use in layer or breeder chickens producing eggs for human consumption [citation:4][citation:5]
- Note: A 2024 study published in Veterinary World reported that lincomycin levels in the liver and kidney of broilers exceeded the maximum residue limit (MRL) after 7 days of treatment, while breast muscle levels remained below the MRL. Proper withdrawal periods should be observed [citation:10].
CONTRAINDICATIONS & PRECAUTIONS
- Species restrictions: Not for use in layer chickens or breeder chickens [citation:5][citation:9]
- Sensitive species: Do not allow rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, horses, or ruminants access to water containing lincomycin. Ingestion by these species may result in severe gastrointestinal effects [citation:1][citation:5]
- Drug interactions: Do not use the water treatment and the feed treatment simultaneously [citation:5][citation:9]
- Hypersensitivity: Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to lincomycin or other lincosamide antibiotics [citation:4]
- Resistance: To reduce the development of antimicrobial resistance and maintain effectiveness, use this antibiotic prudently. Cross-resistance with macrolides may occur [citation:3][citation:4]
- Keep out of reach of children [citation:5][citation:6]
- When handling the product, avoid inhalation, oral exposure, and direct contact with skin or eyes [citation:6]
- Store in a dry place between 15-30°C (59-86°F) [citation:5][citation:6]
- Protect from direct sunlight and moisture
- Use within 28 days after first opening
ADVERSE REACTIONS
- At recommended doses, lincomycin is generally well tolerated in broiler chickens [citation:1]
- If adverse reactions occur, discontinue use and consult a veterinarian
RESPONSIBLE USE
- Use only for the treatment of confirmed necrotic enteritis caused by lincomycin-susceptible Clostridium perfringens [citation:5][citation:9]
- Veterinary consultation and susceptibility testing are recommended where available [citation:4]
- Adhere strictly to recommended dosages and treatment durations; avoid subtherapeutic dosing [citation:4][citation:10]
- Do not use for disease prevention or growth promotion [citation:4]
- Prolonged or repeated use should be avoided by improving management, cleaning, and disinfection practices [citation:4]
